Back in 1973, Gary Neptune had a simple idea: fix gear, share stories, and help fellow adventurers get after it in the mountains. What started as a small boot repair shop in Boulder, Colorado, became something special – a space where climbers, skiers, and mountain lovers gathered to trade beta, swap tales, and gear up for their next adventure.
Gary knew that the best gear advice comes from people who have racked, skied, packed, and put it through its paces. So he built a team of adventurers who lived and breathed outdoor life. They weren't just selling equipment; they were sharing hard-won knowledge from countless days on rock, snow, and ice. That philosophy – enthusiasts helping enthusiasts – became the foundation of Neptune Mountaineering.
In 2021, Maile Spung and the Ute Mountaineer family welcomed Neptune Mountaineering into their fold. This wasn't just a business transaction – it was a homecoming. Maile's father, Bob Wade, has been part of Neptune's story since 1976, when Gary fixed Bob’s pack before his expedition to climb the North Face of the Eiger. That connection to community and history allows us to stay rooted while growing to meet new challenges and opportunities.
We continue to honor our rich history while welcoming all and inspiring a new generation of explorers. We seek meaningful outdoor experiences in our backyard and beyond, using that firsthand knowledge to help you gear up for wherever your next adventure takes you.
